About the studio

One device, from a room on North Lake Avenue.

KLA Waterman, LLC publishes this site and designs MaxClawOS Wallet. The company is a hardware studio. It is not an account provider and not a marketplace.

    The studio opens

KLA Waterman, LLC begins work in Pasadena. The founding engineers had spent the previous decade on payment terminals, where a certified chip and a small screen already decided whether a card transaction was the one the customer saw.

    A notebook titled “confirmation token”

A colleague replaced a phone and lost a software signer with it. The studio wrote down a narrower question: what if the only honest display was a display the phone did not control?

  3. 2021

    The bench unit called Claw

An aluminum slab, two buttons, a screen about an inch across. It was not offered publicly. It existed to learn whether people would actually read a screen that small.

  4. 2023

    The firmware gets its name

A board revision seats a secure element. The software on that board is named MaxClaw OS, because the operating layer on the device is the product. The name is not an account and not a venue.

    The copper edge

The enclosure gains the brushed copper inlay and the button layout shown in these pictures: two steel buttons at the lower right, a chevron under the screen.

What we learned from the category

We did not invent the hardware wallet. The first widely shipped devices, made in Prague and associated with the Trezor name, proved that a tiny screen and physical buttons could show an address the computer was not allowed to redraw. A second line, made in Paris and associated with the Ledger name, proved that a secure element from the payment-card tradition could hold the seed.

MaxClaw OS follows both lessons and neither brand. Trezor and Ledger are trademarks of their owners. KLA Waterman, LLC is not affiliated with them, and this device is not their product. The longer version of that history is in the journal.
