When MaxClawOS Wallet creates a key, it also creates a list of 24 words on its own screen. The holder writes those words on the card with a pen. That card is the backup. There is no second copy in Pasadena, no cloud folder, and no support agent who can look it up.
Why words, written down
The early hardware wallets settled on a word list because a person can write it without a printer, read it back without software, and store it somewhere a network cannot reach. MaxClaw OS keeps that practice. The words are generated on the device during setup. They are shown on the device screen so the computer is not the thing dictating them. The holder writes them, checks them, and puts the card somewhere separate from the device.
Separate matters. A card in the same bag as the device protects against a failed board and fails against a stolen bag. A card photographed into a camera roll protects against a fire and fails against the camera roll. The studio’s advice is dull on purpose: paper, pen, a place you already trust with other paper, not a mailbox and not a photo.
Loss, in both directions
If the device is lost and the card is safe, the words can be entered on a replacement device. The new element becomes the home of the same key. The old device, if it is ever found, is no longer the only copy of the secret, which is the point of a backup and also the reason a lost device should be treated as missing metal rather than as a remote account we can lock. We cannot lock it. We never had a login.
If the card is lost and the device is also lost, there is nothing to restore. That is the cost of a design in which the company is not a custodian. We would rather say so on this page than imply a recovery desk we refuse to operate.
What we will never ask
KLA Waterman, LLC will not ask for the words by email, by phone, or by a form on this site. A message that does is not from us. The contact form is for questions about the product and the company. It is not a place to paste a recovery phrase, and the page will not invite you to.
The card is also not a service. Holding one does not open an account with us, and it does not give access to a desk that buys, sells, exchanges, or trades crypto assets. We do not offer that desk. The card restores a device. That is the entire feature.
